The College Board, the national educational organization, is conducting a search for a Senior Systems Engineer for our Technology department. This position is based in our Reston, Virginia office.

About the Role 

The Senior Systems Engineer (SSE) provides thought and technology leadership for systems engineering, systems design, and related activities within the College Board. The SSE works in the Technology group and across College Board Programs, providing development, design and ongoing support for endpoint operating systems, infrastructure services and COTs applications. Must have in depth knowledge of operating systems and system configurations at enterprise scale.

The SSE engages with other Engineers, Architects, and leaders to develop policies, standards, and technical solutions to meet corporate and enterprise challenges.  In addition, the SSE supports the Enterprise Architecture lifecycle, contributing to the identification, selection, and standardization of systems technologies or services, and applications or services that consume such services.

The SSE supports the Endpoint Engineering process through design and development of server, storage, network/cloud solutions, infrastructure management solutions, support of asset management and configuration server solution development, and implementation support of products and services to support College Board initiatives.  The SSE is responsible for ensuring that the selected solutions are technologically current, highly available, recoverable, and tuned for optimal performance.

Lastly, the SSE will provide escalation support and troubleshooting to resolve problems within the College Board infrastructure, leading such activities where appropriate, coordinating with vendors, College Board technical resources, and Program staff as required.

The successful candidate will interface with customers, peers, and vendors to resolve configuration and operational issues, integration problems, and related technology problems.

Responsibilities of the role

  • Engineer, design and deploy solutions supporting the College Board workers
  • Provide technical leadership in primary areas of competence and provide technical project leadership support.
  • Develop increasing expertise in key technologies.
  • Expertise in problem definition, requirements analysis and the general design and integration of systems.
  • Manage enterprise COTs, infrastructure services, or internal developed solutions to ensure an available and reliable system.
  • Develop architecture diagrams, briefings and training on new end-user services.
  • Interacting directly with IT, ISO, engineering, and operational staff to implement new or enhance existing technologies.
  • Proven experience in managing technologies in enterprise with a drive for understanding customer needs and operational excellence.
  • Ability to provide advice and recommendations on system upgrades, replacements, or new systems.
  • Communication with vendors for upgrades and troubleshooting issues with equipment and software
  • Capable of training and demonstrating product features and operation to non-technical customers.
  • Lead performance testing efforts.
  • Assist in deployment of new applications and services as well as provide tier III incident support.
  • Position may supervise or mentor more junior technical project resources.
  • Represent the College Board and its products in inter-company meetings, and industry conferences.

Qualifications needed for the role 

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in an engineering or related field
  • Seven + years of progressively responsible directly related experience, including project leadership experience.
  • Proven experience in managing technologies in enterprise with a drive for understanding customer needs and operational excellence.
  • Depth in macOS or Windows operating systems with strong understanding of device management.
  • Working knowledge of public cloud services.
  • Experience managing large scale workforce solutions ((Intune, Jamf or AirWatch)
  • Experience with macOS and Windows engineering with proven technology expertise in more than one relevant core areas such as, Active Directory, Windows Modern Management, and Software Distribution
  • Experience in mobile device management especially with Apple devices will be advantageous.
  • Experience planning, designing, and implementing new software solutions.
  • Experience with patching, updates, and vulnerability remediation.

Preferred skills for the role

  • Working knowledge of COTs applications and infrastructure services.

  • VDI and PCaaS, Backup and restore programs
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Strong problem solving and analytic skills.
