Vice President, Advanced Placement (AP) Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment
The College Board, the national educational organization, is conducting a search for a Vice President, Advanced Placement (AP) Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment for our New York, NY office.

Advanced Placement (AP®) is a rigorous academic program built on the commitment, passion and hard work of students and educators from secondary schools and higher education. With 38 courses in a wide variety of subject areas, including our newest course in Computer Science, AP provides willing and academically prepared high school students with the opportunity to study and learn at the college level.
About your role
As the Vice President, Advanced Placement Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (CIA) you will lead course development, instructional and assessment design, and all work to change, improve or evolve AP courses and exams. In this role you will be a leading spokesperson for AP course content, teaching, and learning and will manage the CIA department's 45+ employees and 250 faculty committee members to produce AP courses, assessments, rubrics, and core instructional materials. You will ensure that courses and exams promote and measure the content and skills essential for students to receive advanced placement and college credit
What you’ll do
Course & Content Development
- Develop and communicate the AP Program’s vision and specifications for:
- what students must know and be able to do to qualify for advanced placement and college credit at colleges and universities
- what teachers must know and be able to do to help students develop such knowledge and skills
- how AP assessments measure such knowledge and skills
- Manage the development and evolution of curriculum and content for all AP courses to ensure alignment with research, focus on knowledge and skills required for college placement.
- Ensure the accuracy, clarity, impartiality and relevance of course and assessment content, with a keen eye for detail and a passion for the substance of advanced coursework with an equal dedication to reducing unnecessary breadth of curricula.
Instructional Design & Professional Development
- Lead, direct, and manage the content development, instructional design, and overall design and presentation of materials for online and face-to-face learning experiences for teachers, trainers, and students.
- Help define and implement a model suite of AP teacher support and student practice offerings.
- Oversee the instructional quality, efficacy and content validity of curricular, instructional, and professional development resources by applying research and best practice through the development process.
- Coordinate the implementation of curricular changes in the field, developing and enacting plans to increase teacher understanding of changes.
Assessment Design & Development
- Ensure the exams measure the knowledge and skills valued by colleges/universities for credit/placement, through appropriate test design and exam validation processes.
- Oversee all aspects of curriculum and assessment development committees, , and other groups that are related to curriculum or instructional content development.
- Lead teams in the identification, definition, and application of scoring criteria and performance expectations for AP assessments, including rubrics for scoring.
- Represent the AP Program at national and international conferences; providing information about College Board/AP programs and acting as an internal subject matter expert to staff in pertinent area of responsibility.
- Serve as one of the organization’s primary spokespeople as it relates to the development and expansion of AP curriculum and AP program strategy and priorities.
- Represent AP on task forces and commissions focused on innovation and advances in curriculum and instruction.
- Cultivate a team of leaders by providing direction, clearly articulating role and responsibilities, delegating effectively and empowering appropriate decisions and actions.
- Manage a geographically dispersed department, establishing clear and transparent communications and work processes that facilitate effective collaboration and camaraderie.
- Unify and synthesize work and vision across disciplines (English, math, science, history, world languages, arts, social science), as well as functions (curriculum, instruction, assessment).
- Drive change management and implement an agile approach to completing quality work on time, on budget and with cross department feedback
- Collaborate with the other AP department heads and leaders to ensure cooperation and shared buy-in to relevant processes and changes.
- Serve as a member of the AP &Instruction Division Leadership team, working collaboratively to drive productivity and employee engagement within the division.
- Master’s Degree and high school teaching experience; AP teaching experience highly preferred
- 10+ years of management experience
- Experience initiating, managing and implementing complex curriculum and instruction development projects
- Experience managing, and empowering a team of managers-who effectively manage their own teams/functions
- Background in instructional design, educational publishing, professional development, and/or curriculum content development
- Strong problem resolution, negotiation and interpersonal skills
- Ability to relate to educators and other constituents at various levels
- Experience leading or working closely with product development efforts
- Commitment to preparing students, particularly from underserved communities, for college success
- Intellectual and scholarly curiosity, preferably across multiple academic disciplines
- Background and experience in one or more STEM disciplines
- Excellent verbal written oral presentation and public speaking skills
- Strong customer service orientation
- Solid time management and prioritization skills
- Computer literacy, with Microsoft Office
- Ability to travel (25-50%) and manage a geographically distributed team
